Multiple Literacies

When I think about communication, and how vital it is to stay in touch with the people around me, the first things that come to mind is my cell phone. I stay on my phone, some way or another all day, whether it is keeping up with appointments in my planner, checking my email, texting, taking pictures, using the gps system, or talkinng to someone. It is device that I can not live without. About 7 years ago, I wasn't thinking about a cell phone. I was using the house phone with no call waiting and struggling with dial-up internet. Now, everything is faster and easier to manage requiring less effort and time.

The next thing that comes to mind is my laptop. I have a desktop at home but it is much more convenient to be able to take my computer with me. I can type papers, browse the internet, pay bills, set appointments and work from my computer. Just like any other college student, I play around on Myspace and Facebook. I love to send comments to friends and chat during boring moments. I've also recently learned how to blog.

The last literacy that I have recently started using is a mp3 player. I recieved one as a gift on Christmas and my boyfriend taught me how to download music to it. You can even put movies and pictures on it. I'm very excited.

Communication is essential in everything that we do. Its important to stay connected with people in order to build a community and have a strong network of support. You never know who you may need to call on. I've learned in the past that it's not where you go but it's who you know.
